Gust Commentary
Greg CarpenterMozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) is by many considered to be his most finely crafted opera. How, after 226 years, does this opera steeped in the political intrigues of pre-French Revolutionary Europe continue to remain on the top 10  list of most often performed operas? Is it the story of the clever barber, turned valet who uses his street smarts to outwit his lecherous master Count Almaviva? Is it the politically charged, yet comical situations that somehow resonate with our 21st century world? Or, is it the superbly crafted music which touches us in ways that few operas can?  I say it’s ALL THREE!

Certainlly, Figaro’s street savvy charm wins the affections of the audience in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro there is a lovable quality to Figaro’s sometimes thick headed character. He certainly is not the sharpest tack in the box. Remember, it is really Susanna and the Countess that play the trick on both Figaro and the Count which ultimately leads to the final reconciliation scene. The revolutionary overtones of Mozart’s opera paint a vivid picture of a servant’s open confrontation with an arrogant and domineering noble lord. It’s the battle of the haves and have nots. Sounds familiar… think about the Occupy Wall Street movement.

What brings together the endearing qualities of the story and characters is the musical genius of Mozart. His ability to animate his characters through highly individualized musical styles; jaunty, folk-like melodies for Figaro, elegant soaring melodies for the Countess, simple and innocent melodies for Susanna, and sometimes blustery and other times slick melodies for the Count create vividly human relationships that one moment soar to the heights of comic hilarity and the next, to the depths of compassion and humility.

In the hands of master director David Gately, Opera Colorado’s spectacular production brings to life Mozart’s extraordinary characters and music, with a cast that represents some of our audience favorites along side many debut artists. I hope you join us for the opening production of our spectacular 2012 Season, February 11, 14, 17, and 19 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
